Why a Persona?
What is a persona and why is it important to my branding efforts? Creating a persona, a fictional character to represent a user type for your service/product is important to your marketing efforts..
Whether you’re developing a smartphone app or a mobile-responsive website, it’s very important to understand who will be using the product or service. You first need to understand your users and their needs.
Personas are said to put a personal human face on otherwise abstract data about customers. By thinking about the needs of a fictional persona, designers may be better able to infer what a real person might need. Such inference may assist with brainstorming and marketing your product/service. I can provide clarity for your designers. It can increase the quality and consistency of the designer's work.
Knowing your audience will help influence the features and design elements you choose, thus making your product more useful. A persona clarifies who is in your target audience by answering the following questions:
- Who is my ideal customer?
- What are the current behavior patterns of my users?
- What are the needs and goals of my users?
- What issues and pain-points do they currently face within the given context?
Understanding the needs of your users is vital to developing a successful product/service. Well-defined personas will enable you to efficiently identify and communicate user needs. Personas will also help you describe the individuals who use your product, which is essential.
Personas help with strategizing and making smart design decisions. This can include color. Start thinking of some of products/services that you use and notice the color and general feeling of their marketing.
There is also several reasons why companies think personas don't work:
- They are created but not used.
- They are created by the team with no buy-in from the administration.
- People don't know what personas are and why they are useful. Stakeholders have to be educated.
Personas should be used with a well-defined goal in mind. A good way to start is to a more general persona for your company and then create a very specific one(s) for a project you are promoting.
